Shark Awareness – Report of recent shark incident at Comfortless Cove
16 April 2021
Conservation, Government
AIG has received reports of an incident on the afternoon of 14 April 2021 where two people snorkelling in Comfortless Cove were repeatedly approached by a large Galapagos shark who displayed very inquisitive behaviour. They were able to exit the water onto the rocks and were not injured by the shark, but they were shaken. The couple had prior experience of swimming with sharks and took appropriate measures to deter the shark, but it continued to approach them.
In light of this incident and the unusually high number of sharks still present in the inshore water around Ascension, AIG would strongly urge anyone considering entering the water to carefully consider the risks to themselves and those around them.
