Invitation to Submit Proposals by 30 August

The Ascension Island Government is pleased to announce the establishment of the Ascension Island Marine Protected Area Community Trust (AIMPACT) Fund, with an open invitation for the community to submit bids for project funds by Friday, 30 August 2024.

As background - On 29 August 2019, the Government of Ascension Island designated a fully protected MPA covering its full 445,000km² exclusive economic zone (EEZ). A long-term supporter of Blue Marine Foundation donated £2 million to establish the AIMPACT to be run by Blue Marine for the purpose of taking steps to realise the socio-economic benefits of the Ascension Island Marine Protected Area (or “MPA”) for those living on Ascension.

Under the Terms of Reference (ToRs) for use of the fund, at least £80,000 per year will be available to fund projects on Ascension that fall under the following four categories:

  • Community
  • Education
  • Environment
  • Heritage

Project bids will be assessed in line with the ToRs by the AIMPACT Fund Project Advisory Group which will make funding recommendations to Blue Marine for a final decision.  The AIMPACT Fund Project Advisory Group consists of representatives from ten different local community groups and members of AIG. Bids are encouraged from all sources including individuals and organisations. Please submit your bids by email using the bidding form by Friday 30 August to aigenquiries@ascension.gov.ac Bidding rounds will be held twice a year.

The ToRs and the bidding application form are available on the AIG website and can be accessed via the below links:

The AIG hopes that the AIMPACT Fund will receive a wide range of project proposals from across the whole community. For any enquiries regarding the AIMPACT Fund or the bidding process, please contact the Administrator’s Office.
