Question

CEF 19 2024 Airhead Stop Signs

Question:

Concerns have been raised regarding vehicles inadvertently ignoring the stop signs when travelling in the vicinity of the Airhead.

Most vehicles drive around with their windows up, aircon on and radio playing, meaning that drivers cannot hear the buzzer sounding to alert of an incoming/outbound aircraft. Reports of the flashing lights being not very visible have also been submitted.

Can a better system be considered? Suggestions such as a stop/go traffic light with road markings have been made.

Answer:

Thank you for your enquiry about the effectiveness of the approaching aircraft Stop signs at the western end of the Wideawake Airfield.

As you may have seen, following a separate discussion with the USSF and RAF military Base Commanders, the AIG issued a Public Notice on 8 October 2024 reminding the public of the need to comply with controlled and restricted access areas. This included a section highlighting the need for drivers to observe the three stop signs that specifically warn of approaching aircraft. These three existing signs consist of a combination of large bright red stop signs, flashing lights and an audible siren. The combined effect is that when alerts sound, these signs should be difficult for any driver to miss.

The three approaching aircraft stop signs are in addition to two road marked stop signs at the junction of Cat Hill Rd and South West Road which apply at all times.

The AIG has confirmed that no concerns over drivers failing to comply with the existing stop signs have been reported to The Royal St Helena Police Service. However, the Base Commanders have agreed to discuss the concerns you have presented at the next runway user group meeting with a view to establishing whether any improvements to signage are necessary. The outcome will be reported back to the AIG for consideration. The runway user group consists of representatives from the key organisations involved in runway operations and is responsible for considering any related safety and security issues.
