Question

CEF 25 2024 Waste Management

Question:

Several constituents have been asking questions about Ascension’s waste management, specifically confused about the newly introduced green bins and how to properly dispose of food waste. Many people were unaware of the sensitivities of the waste incinerator and that this was the reasoning behind separating waste. Could there be some more literature made available to the public about recycling and how personal waste management contributes to the larger picture?

Response:

Dear Councillor Shearer,

Thank you for your enquiry which we are pleased to answer as follows.

The Director of Facilities & Operations has confirmed the following.

 These bins were introduced via a Public Notice dated 24 September 2024.

 The separation of food waste is primarily to make the process of sorting the waste less unpleasant. All waste needs to be checked (including opening bin bags) before incineration to ensure items like car parts do not find their way into the incinerator.

 We do however recognise that the messaging needs to be refreshed and could be improved on and we plan to do this early in the new year.

 We are also looking at the possibility of having clear, as opposed to black, bin bags which would make the checking process easier.

We hope this answer helps, but please let us know if you have any further queries.

Councillor Shearer
