New signs help safe passage for spawning land crabs

Conservation, Press Release
Thanks to Darwin funding, the AIG Conservation team, supported by the Operations and Facilities team, has installed new signage in Two Boats and Travellers.
The signs were installed on through routes of the two main settlements where land crabs are often observed passing. The crabs travel through these areas during their migration route from the heights of Green Mountain to spawn on the rocky shores of North East Bay.
One of the biggest risks to land crabs on Ascension is mortality via road traffic. While they are often observed on the roads, the crabs lack road awareness so we have to be extra vigilant for them!
The signs installed operate via solar power and help to raise awareness of the crabs in the settlements. Additional temporary road signs have been added to North East Bay road, reminding road users to be aware.
The AIG Conservation team thanks the community for being crab aware.
