Public consultation on Single-Use Vape Prohibition Policy Begins
23 December 2024
Government, Press Release
The Ascension Island Government (AIG) announces the start of a public consultation for the draft "Policy on the Prohibition of Single-Use Vapes in Ascension" beginning today, 23 December 2024. This policy aims to protect Ascension’s unique biodiversity and marine environment by reducing the environmental impact of improperly disposed single-use vapes.
The proposed policy would prohibit the supply of single-use vapes on the island, making supply a criminal offence, while possession for personal use would remain lawful. It addresses risks posed by lithium-ion batteries, toxic chemicals, and plastics found in these devices, which endanger local wildlife and increase fire hazards at waste sites. The policy aligns with Ascension’s obligations under international biodiversity and conservation agreements.
Copies of the draft policy are available on the AIG website and at the Administrator’s Office in Georgetown. Public feedback is welcomed and should be submitted by 20 January 2025 via email to aigenquiries@ascension.gov.ac
