2 November 2023

Government, Press Release

Dr Samantha Phippard, an expert in international safeguarding working with Hampshire County Council, and her husband, Joe Phippard, a Detective Lecturer affiliated with the London Metropolitan Police, conducted a series of accredited training events in Ascension from 16 to 27 October. Their visit primarily entailed consultation work along with training sessions in various areas:

  • Safeguarding for Professionals – covered best safeguarding practices for professionals
  • UK Accredited ‘Safer Recruitment’ – The focus here was on establishing robust protocols for hiring organizations, ensuring protection against unsuitable or potentially harmful applicants.
  • Participation Event at Two Boats School – worked with all secondary school children to discuss ‘needs’ and ‘rights’
  • ‘Keeping Safe Online’ Community Event at Two Boats Community Centre - this event addressed strategies to mitigate risks for children accessing the internet.
  • Achieving Best Evidence (ABE) Training - Led by Joe Phippard, this training covered methods of collecting evidence for the purposes of police investigation from witnesses who might be deemed vulnerable.

The training events were well attended, receiving positive feedback from all participants. AIG is grateful for the UK Government’s Conflict, Stability, and Security Fund (CSSF) Overseas Territories Justice Programme which funded the visit and for supporting the ongoing peer mentoring and coaching relationship with Hampshire County Council.
