Ascension Island represented in international event
The International Maritime Rescue Federation (IMRF) recently held its second Women in Search and Rescue (SAR) training course as part of the organisation’s ongoing campaign to raise the representation of women in the SAR sector.
Ascension Island Sea and Land Rescue Coxswain/Crew Leader, Laura Shearer attended the exclusive event for female members of the IMRF community. The event incorporated a range of bespoke training and workshops as well as the opportunity to learn and collaborate with other female SAR professionals.
The event was held in conjunction with the Finnish Lifeboat Institution with 16 women representing 10 SAR organisations from around the globe. The training event gave participants the opportunity to learn practical and real-life operational skills delivered by experts at the FLBI.
Live exercises were performed on a range of rescue boats with simulated exercises designed to improve communication and decision-making skills. Participants also learned about understanding crew welfare, operational safety and developed skills on leading SAR exercises and live rescue calls.
